Two women died and a third is in critical condition after a single-car accident on Interstate 95 Friday.
The driver, Frances Brown Dounian, and the front seat passenger, Mary Ann Collins, both of Columbia, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened around 9 a.m..
A third woman, from Greer, was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, according to Hardeeville police. Her name and the ages of all three women were unavailable late Friday from the Jasper County Coroner's Office and the Hardeeville Police Department.Witnesses said Dounian, who was driving a Buick sedan, swerved to avoid debris in the north bound lane and struck a tree off the shoulder of the road, Hardeeville Police patrol Lt. Steven Thomas said Friday. The women were on their way home after spending the Fourth of July on Hilton Head Island, Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls said.
All three women were wearing seat belts, and the vehicle's air bags deployed, Sauls said.
It's not clear what sort of debris Dounian might have swerved to avoid; nothing was found near the scene of the accident, Thomas said.
Traffic between mile markers 12 and 8 was backed up for about two hours, Thomas said.
