A booklet produced and distributed by the Hilton Head Island-based S.C. Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association has been renamed after a copyright dispute with a rival publication.
Hilton Head businessman Marc Frey, who has owned and published "Golfer's Guide" since 1992, claimed the name of the Golf Course Owners Association booklet, "Guide to Golf," too closely resembled his own. He did not file a lawsuit.
The association recently renamed its publication "Hilton Head Golf." An undisclosed amount of money was also involved in the settlement, Frey said.
The association publishes its booklet three times a year, according to information on the publication's title page. The association comprises 27 golf courses throughout Beaufort County.
Association president Cary Corbitt declined to comment on the settlement, calling it "a private matter." He added that he had not received any feedback from association members and that the publication "continues to serve our golf course owners."
Frey also declined to reveal the terms of the settlement, adding that negotiations took "a few weeks" and he considers the matter "done and resolved."
According to the "Golfer's Guide" website, the publication was founded in 1982 and has expanded since Frey purchased it to promote golf courses in 25 markets throughout North America.
