A small marsh island smoldered through Thursday, sending smoke to the Spanish Wells area and leaving firefighters once again hoping for rain.
Crews with the Town of Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division sprayed water on hot spots from 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m., Chief Lavarn Lucas said. Firefighters have been trying to extinguish the fire on Sunset Island since early Tuesday.
"We applied as much effort today as we possibly could in order to give Mother Nature a hand in hopes that she will finish it off with rain," Lucas said. "We'll be back in the morning if we do not get any rain during the night."
