In recognition of its 150th anniversary, the Penn Center on St. Helena Island was one of 14 award recipients from the Palmetto Trust for Histroic Preservation.
Winners were honored Friday by Gov. Nikki Haley and other dignitaries in a ceremony at the Statehouse in Columbia.
Sponsored by the Palmetto Trust, the S.C. Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor, the awards recognize accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation and interpretation of South Carolina's architectural and cultural heritage, according to a news release.
The Penn Center was honored for its continued preservation of the culture, architectural history, environmental stewardship and ethnography of the Gullah people of the Sea Islands.
