Students at Robert Smalls Middle School will be able to participate in a military science program next school year.
The Beaufort County Board of Education approved the proposed military academy on a unanimous vote Tuesday. Board member Steven Morello was absent.
Robert Smalls principal Denise Smith has said the program, which will be available to seventh- and eighth-graders, is aimed at developing leadership skills and accountability. Smith also said she hopes the program will ease student transitions to Battery Creek High School, which has a large JROTC program.
According to a news release, up to 200 students could be enrolled in the new program, which is expected to carry no additional costs to the district.
