The city of Beaufort is soliciting proposals from developers to create affordable housing on Lafayette Street and is also tackling a related parking problem at Basil Green Recreational Complex.
The lot at 1403 Lafayette St. has been used as parking for the complex, but that will no longer be an option if houses are built on the .895 acre city-owned property.
Meeting Thursday, the Redevelopment Commission is seeking proposals from developers interested in building the affordable, owner-occupied residences. Proposals are due March 26.
At the meeting, city Planning Director Libby Anderson presented a plan to formalize and add parking at Basil Green, bring the number of spaces to 244.
Although the complex has parking now, most of it is grass and relatively indistinguishable from the no-parking areas. Spaces are not marked, so the number of vehicles can fit depends largely on how drivers park, Anderson said.
The grass also gets torn up, she said.
The plan is to define parking areas and cover them in a hard material, such as gravel, Anderson said.
Beaufort County and the city are using their S.C. Park & Recreation Development Fund grants for part of the parking project. The county has $21,722 from 2011, and the city is using a combined $4,975 from 2011 and 2012. The grants require municipalities to kick in local dollars, so the city is paying an additional $16,797.
Removing "No Parking" signs and formalizing spaces will add parking along Rodgers Avenue and Lafayette, Nairne and Godfrey streets. The entrance would be reconfigured to add parking as well.
The project could be done within a year, Anderson said.
