Bob Smith, past president of the Heritage Library Foundation on Hilton Head, will talk at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday about how the island and Beaufort County were at the core of the run-up to secession. The talk is at the Heritage Library.
Among Smith's relatives is Barnwell Rhett, a fiery secessionist born in Beaufort with the last name "Smith" but who legally changed his last name in 1837 to Rhett, according to the library.
Reservations: Call 843-686-6560; cost is $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers.
The library is on the second floor of the Savannah Bank Building, 852 William Hilton Parkway.
