A sailor stationed at Naval Hospital Beaufort was fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend Thursday night during a domestic dispute in Port Royal, authorities say.
Leo Deandre Scott, 26, of Columbus, Ga., abducted the couple's child and fled in the woman's car, investigators said. An Amber Alert was issued for the child, who was later found unharmed in Columbus.
Authorities are still looking for Scott, according to Port Royal police Capt. Alan Beach.
Officers were called at about 9 p.m. to a home on Battery Lane after receiving a tip that the female resident might have been shot during an argument with Scott, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her child. When police entered the apartment, they found the woman fatally shot in the head, according to Beach.
Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen and Navy officials declined to disclose the victim's identity, citing a Defense Department policy that requires authorities to wait 24 hours after the family of a deceased service member has been notified before releasing the name.
A warrant has been issued for Scott's arrest, Beach said. Scott has no prior arrests in Beaufort County, according to court records.
The victim was assigned to Naval Hospital Beaufort and worked at the hospital's branch health clinic at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, said hospital spokeswoman Regena Kowitz.
Kowitz said the hospital's staff was shocked by the news Friday.
"We are an incredibly close-knit facility," Kowitz said. "We really do think of ourselves as a family, and we are incredibly saddened by what happened. It's not been a great day. Our heart goes out to her family."
Allen said an autopsy was performed Friday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
