A single-wide mobile home on St. Helena Island was destroyed Monday evening in what officials are calling a suspicious fire.
The home, near the intersection of Scott Hill Road and Vineyard Point, was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.
According to Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District spokesman Lee Levesque, firefighters received a call from a passerby or neighbor at about 5:30 p.m.
Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered that the power to the mobile home had been cut off.
"Once we know that (the fire) is not related to cooking or an electrical problem, we start to think that it may be suspicious," Levesque said.
Firefighters were able to completely extinguish the blaze by about 7 p.m., but by then, flames had devastated much of the structure, and damage from smoke and soot rendered the home uninhabitable, Levesque said.
The home's owners are out of town, according to Levesque, although he could not confirm whether they had been contacted.
