A 30-year-old Hilton Head Island man was killed early Saturday when he was struck by a car while walking on U.S. 278, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Authorities said Antonio Diaz was walking at about 3 a.m. in the westbound lane of the highway near Folly Field Road when he was struck by an SUV.
Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
The 26-year-old driver of the SUV was not injured in the crash, and will not be charged, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins, highway patrol spokesman.
"Pedestrians must walk on the shoulder" of the road, Collins said.
The highway patrol is investigating the crash.
Diaz's death is the latest in a recent spate of pedestrian deaths in Beaufort and Jasper counties.
Since October, three people have been killed and others seriously injured after being hit by vehicles in the two counties, including the death Friday of 19-year-old Aaron Lemont Morris of Hampton County, who was struck by several cars on U.S. 17 near Bull Corner Road in Yemassee.
Others killed include Zachary Holland, 28, of Hilton Head, who was struck Oct. 26 by a Palmetto Breeze bus about six miles east of Ridgeland on S.C. 462, and an unidentified Hispanic man struck Oct. 16 while walking or standing in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 near mile marker 29.
