The bodies of a man and a woman with multiple gunshot wounds found in a Ridgeland apartment Saturday night may have been there for days, according to the Ridgeland Police Department.
Victims Tameeka Nicole Welch, 35, who lived in the apartment at 165 Heron Crossing Road, and Chad Kyle Beckett, 22, of 37 Snookie Lane, were discovered at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday when Ridgeland police officers entered the apartment while responding to a welfare check.
Family members of Welch and Beckett, whom police believe were dating, requested the welfare check because they had not heard from them in several days, said public information officer Tim East.
While time of death has not been established, police believe the murders could have happened as early as Wednesday, East said.
Never miss a local story.
"What we're looking for is any leads, anyone who had seen anything in that area from Wednesday through Saturday," East said.
No one in the Heron Crossing apartment building reported gunshots fired during that period, East said.
The autopsy report from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston has yet to be released, East said.
Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls said the couple died of gunshot wounds.
East said evidence has also been sent to S.C. Law Enforcement Division forensic labs for processing but would not say what evidence was collected at the scene.
Police have yet to identify any suspects, East said.
Attempts to reach Ridgeland Police Chief Robert Woods were unsuccessful.
Attempts to reach Beckett's family were also unsuccessful.
