A 20-year-old Beaufort woman identified as a person of interest in a fatal shooting this week was charged Wednesday with manslaughter.
Roquel Connors killed Mark Kevin Jones, 51, of Burton on Sunday during a drug deal gone awry, Beaufort Police Chief Matt Clancy said.
Clancy said Jones drove two men to Canal Apartments off Salem Road to buy drugs from Connors. During the exchange, Clancy said, one of the men attempted to steal drugs and money from Connors, and a struggle ensued.
Connors pulled a 9 mm handgun from her purse and fired one shot at Jones, Clancy said.
Jones was found slumped over the steering wheel of a Chrysler PT Cruiser near the entrance of the apartment complex. He was pronounced dead in an ambulance en route to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, according to authorities.
Investigators say they found a 9 mm shell casing and a spent bullet inside the car, which is registered to Jones' wife.
Results from an autopsy performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston indicate Jones died from a single gunshot wound, according to the Beaufort County Coroner's Office.
Connors was charged with manslaughter, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Clancy said.
She was in the county jail with bond set at $300,000, according to the jail log.
Clancy said the investigation continues, and additional charges against other suspects are pending.
