A 70-year-old woman died Saturday after her SUV collided with a fuel tanker in Port Royal.
At about 7:30 a.m., a 2005 Toyota RAV4 driven by Elizabeth Sweinhart of Clayton, Ga., collided with the tanker near the intersection of Lenora Drive and Ribaut Road, said Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.
Ott said it appeared Sweinhart attempted to turn left onto Ribaut Road from Lenora Drive and drove into the path of the oncoming 2006 Mack Truck.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, Ott said.
No other serious injuries were reported.
Traffic on Ribaut Road near the base of the Russell Bridge was backed up for hours Saturday while members of the Beaufort Fire Department, Port Royal Police Department and S.C. Highway Patrol cleared the scene.
Ott said Port Royal police are investigating the crash.
