The 17th annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival opens today in the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, with music, competitions and events scheduled through Saturday evening.
Festival organizers with Main Street Beaufort, USA, hope more than 10,000 people will attend over the two days.
Restaurants will compete for the Silver Cup, with points awarded for booth decorations, people's choice and a shrimp cook-off. Judges will include two food writers.
"We actually have people who write about food, who are passionate about food, who are judging it," said Androula Weiland, Main Street's events manager.
Friday starts with the craft market and a concert, and Saturday will include a run/walk, several shrimp-themed competitions and a variety of shrimp recipes.
Participants can register for the race from noon to 5 p.m. today at the Visitor Center in the Arsenal on Craven Street, or from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on Bay Street in front of the Beaufort Downtown Marina.
Festival-goers can buy Wheel of Fortune lottery tickets both days and meet Vanna White on Saturday.
The S.C. Shrimpers Association, which promotes the state's shrimping industry, helps Main Street conduct the festival. Only fresh, wild shrimp will be served.
