Three winner's bracket games of the Dixie Boys World Series at Burton Wells Park were postponed Sunday due to thunderstorms and will resume today at 10 a.m.
Surfside Beach scored on a bizarre play just before the delay to lead the Beaufort All-Stars 1-0 in the top of the third. Beaufort tagged out Surfside catcher Jacob Ziegler in a run down between third and home, but a throw to cut down Devin Melko at second sailed into center field. With no one covering the outfield, Melko coasted home.
"We've got to play through it," Beaufort coach Jim Pike said. "That's all we can do."
Carson Gregory earned the start for Beaufort. Lefty Dillon Johnson threw for Surfside. Johnson escaped a minor jam in the second when Beaufort's Jordan Bates was tagged out trying to score from third on a passed ball.
Never miss a local story.
Pike said he would return Gregory to the mound this morning if Gregory's arm felt ready, and that ace Mattison Pike would be available to back him up.
The teams have a history. Beaufort finished second to Surfside in the state tournament the past two years, with both squads featuring many of the same players.
