A Beaufort gym will celebrate the opening of a new location on Lady's Island next week with a fundraiser for local firefighters.
Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, EarthFIT Training Facility is offering $5, 30-minute training sessions at its new 3,600-square foot location on Sams Point Road. Proceeds from the sessions will be matched by EarthFIT and donated to the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District to help purchase new physical fitness equipment.
Ian Hart, the gym's owner, said he hopes to raise at least $1,000 for the fire district.
"We train a couple of their firefighters and they were talking about buying some new fitness equipment," Hart said. "I think all fire departments could use some money at this point. We know the firefighters take physical fitness seriously, and they're close by. It's a good cause.
Never miss a local story.
"I wouldn't say I don't care as much about the grand opening, but I really wanted someone else to benefit from it," he added.
The event will be attended by several local officials, including Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling, according to a press release.
Lee Levesque, fire district spokesman, said the workout equipment firefighters currently use is in "fair shape," but said the department was honored to be the beneficiaries of Saturday's event.
"We are in the process of renovating our equipment, and EarthFIT was gracious enough to offer to help replace some of it," Levesque said. "They're in our jurisdiction now so it's kind of a win-win. The physical aspect of our job is undeniable and our department is always willing to work with us to make sure we have every opportunity to keep ourselves healthy."
