A 53-year-old woman told authorities she thwarted a possible armed robbery attempt in a Shelter Cove parking lot by pressing a panic button on her key fob and driving away as a man with a gun pounded on her window.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident late Saturday outside Fuddruckers restaurant, where the victim had just ended her work shift.
The woman said she had just gotten into her car at about 11:15 p.m. when a man armed with a gun suddenly ran up to her vehicle and attempted to open the driver-side front door. The victim had locked her doors when she entered her car, so the suspect wasn't able to get in, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.
The suspect continued to pound on her window, showing a handgun. The victim then pressed the panic button on her key fob and started to drive away. The suspect fled toward U.S. 278, the release said.
The victim was not harmed.
The suspect was described as a male whose race was unknown, about 5-foot-7, 125 pounds, dressed in all-black clothing and a black ski mask.
