A 21-year-old Ridgeland man died Saturday night after the car he was riding in ran off Old Palmetto Bluff road in Bluffton and landed upside down in a drainage ditch, according to a Bluffton Police Department news release.
Devin Michael Roach, who was sitting in the back seat of the Chevrolet Cobalt coupe, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
Roach was wearing a seat belt, Allen said.
A front-seat passenger, Robert Marshall, 25, of Bluffton was flown by LifeStar emergency helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah with severe injuries. He remained in the intensive care unit there Sunday, according to hospital staff.
The car's driver, Shane Harper, 22, of Hardeeville and another passenger, John Marshall, 20, of Bluffton were taken to Savannah by ambulance with injuries that were not life-threatening, the release said.
It was unclear if the three injured men were wearing seat belts.
The four men were traveling on Old Palmetto Bluff Road toward May River Road at about 7 p.m. Saturday when the car ran off the southwest side of the road, sideswiped a tree, struck another tree and landed upside down in a drainage ditch, according to the release.
Bluffton police are investigating the cause of the crash. Old Palmetto Bluff Road was closed between Palmetto Bluff and May River roads for about three hours until emergency workers cleared the scene, the release said.
