Thanks to Dataw Island Quilters president Mary Carter for sharing the story of the group's new community outreach project.
Community outreach is common for the club and other quilting groups in Beaufort County. Some help the Child Abuse Prevention Association and Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse, and this group for many years made quilts for the first babies born on holidays at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
But this year, the Dataw Island Quilters are doing something closer to home.
Never miss a local story.
Each year, the Dataw Island Quilters create and provide infant and children's quilts to organizations in the community as part of its outreach project.
Open to all members of the Dataw community, the Dataw Island Quilters has 27 members who share a love of quilting.
A baby quilt workshop was organized by Susan Jorgensen. The Dataw quilters created an array of colorful juvenile quilts.
The membership voted to present this year's quilts to the PACE Program on St. Helena Island.
On Nov. 3, Inez Smalls, director of the PACE Program at Penn Center, was presented with 37 quilts from the Dataw Island Quilters.
The Program for Academic and Cultural Enrichment was established at Penn Center in 2002. It provides day care for 37 little ones, ages 3 months to 4 years old.
In addition, a bus transports children from St. Helena Elementary School to Penn Center for a daily after-school program.
The PACE program is run on Penn Center grounds. The building has three rooms designated for children according to age groups (3 months to 12 months, 1- and 2-year-olds, and 3- and 4-year-olds). Adjoining the building is a large fenced play area with a variety of equipment.
The donated quilts will be on display Thursday through Saturday at the York W. Bailey Museum at Penn Center during the 28th annual Heritage Days Celebration.
