Free class to discuss use of local land
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Carolina Beaufort will present a lecture on land use from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 3 in Suite 304-A of the Pineland Station shopping center on Hilton Head Island.
The class will address how global finance, peak-oil concerns and climate change have affected land use and the implications for Beaufort County. It will focus on solutions to five challenges -- jobs, water quality, government services, land use and growth -- and emphasize issues specific to Hilton Head, including airport expansion.
Reservations for the free class, "Balancing Man and Nature: Land Use in the Lowcountry -- Hilton Head," are required.
Never miss a local story.

Group to host homebuyer clinics
Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry has scheduled a homebuyer financial education program from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on four Saturdays -- Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20 and Dec. 4 -- at the Burton Wells Senior Center in Burton.
The program is geared toward first-time homebuyers but anyone may attend, according to a news release. Students must go to all four classes to receive a certificate of completion.
Cost for course materials is $40 a person. Registration is required.
Completion of the program, combined with income eligibility, might qualify graduates for funding assistance programs, according to the release. Some mortgage lenders also require such education.
Registration forms are available at the organization's office in Bluffton, 1-B Kittie's Landing Way, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
