A St. Helena Island woman reported threatening messages being sent to her son by someone he met playing online video games, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.
The woman told deputies on Friday that her son had sent approximately $200 worth of prepaid cards to someone online after the person threatened to hurt someone else, according to the report. The threats and demands for payment were made throughout January and February.
The son made friends with a couple of players from Pennsylvania in his online video games and eventually started to text one of them outside of the game, according to the report. In January, one of the friends started to tell the victim that he would hurt the other Pennsylvanian friend if he didn’t send a $10 prepaid card.
The threats were repeated approximately 20 times with more money transferred each time until March 4, when the victim told his mother he didn’t feel safe and thought the player in Pennsylvania might come to Beaufort County to hurt him. The two cell phone numbers the victim provided to the Sheriff’s Office had southeastern Pennsylvania area codes.
