Strawberry season is here! Kind of.
Thanks to the recent spell of unseasonable warmth, Dempsey Farms on St. Helena Island opened for strawberry picking late Friday morning, according to a post on their Facebook page signed by co-owner Davey Dempsey.
They announced that they would be open again on Saturday, from 10 a.m. “until we get picked out.”
This isn’t an official start to the season, the post said. Weather will be watched closely in the coming days to determine what hours of operation will be next week, if there are any.
“The strawberries are just starting and what we have ready now are due to warm weather last week,” said the post.
Updates on strawberry availability and hours will be posted on Monday, according to the post.
Additional produce, like squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, watermelon, cantaloupe, sweet corn and okra, should become available later in the year.
