Two wrecks on Interstate 95 between Beaufort and Yemassee exits sent three people to the hospital and temporarily blocked both lanes of northbound traffic Friday night.
The first crash was a single vehicle that rolled over at mile marker 37, said Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, with the S.C. Highway Patrol. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Traffic backed up as a result of the first crash led to a five-car pileup, Jones said. Three people were hospitalized from the second wreck, including one who was airlifted to Savannah.
None of the injuries were life-threatening, Jones said. One lane of northbound traffic remained closed late Friday night.
Both northbound lanes were initially blocked after the wreck at about 7 p.m. Friday, Yemassee Police Department spokesman Matthew Garnes said.
Highway Patrol investigated the crash, with assistance from Hampton County Sheriff’s Office and Yemassee Police.
Police photos from the scene show a vehicle overturned in the median, debris strewn across both lanes and a first responder working inside a sedan that appears to have been rear-ended by a large pickup truck.
