We are approaching the end of sea turtle season in Beaufort County, and a group of Beaufort teachers have decided to devote part of their vacation to helping the little guys out, WSAV reports.
A group of roughly 15 teachers came together to volunteer for the Harbor Island Sea Turtle Project, reports WSAV, walking the beach on Harbor Island, locating and inventorying turtle nests and counting the number of eggs laid.
They even helped five baby sea turtles get to the ocean, said WSAV.
“We live in a beautiful environment and unfortunately these sea turtles have a rough time of it with human interference and natural predators,” technology coach Eve Heaton told WSAV. “This gives us an opportunity to help save something that’s unique to our environment here in the Lowcountry.”
Never miss a local story.
Sea turtle season typically runs from the start of May until mid August, WSAV reports.
