Parts of Hunting Island are closed and others under water after heavy rains Wednesday followed days of wet weather.
The park’s South Beach is closed, state parks director Phil Gaines said Thursday. Much of the road to North Beach is under water, he said, and stakes and caution tape line the road.
The campground is flooded, though many of the sites are out of the water, Gaines said. The park is working with campers whose sites are under water.
Visitors are being told about the park’s conditions at the gate.

“Not this much rain since (Hurricane) Matthew,” Gaines said in an email.
When South Beach reopens will depend on whether the area gets more rain. If it stays dry, the beach could reopen in a couple of days, Gaines said.
Members of a popular Hunting Island Facebook group posted photos of the flooded campground during the rain and advised those with upcoming reservations to call ahead and ask whether their sites were dry.
The campground opened Aug. 4, the first time campers had been allowed back since the devastating storm in October.
