Two men who held up Dollar General in Yemassee on Monday night got away with $4,500 after punching and kicking one of the store’s clerks, who had brandished a knife in an attempt to stop the armed robbery, Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander said Thursday.
Investigators are searching for one suspect and released a police sketch from his description.. A sketch of the second suspect could not be made because he was completely covered during the robbery, Alexander said.
The woman injured, Alice Koivu, of Yemassee, has a black eye and some bruising but is recovering, Alexander said. Her coworker was unharmed.
The suspects, both wearing masks and sweatshirts, entered Dollar General at 9:55 p.m. as the two women were counting the cash drawer to make their nightly deposit, Alexander said. One man pulled out a handgun and demanded money. The second man confronted Koivu.
After removing money from the store’s safe, the suspects fled on foot, Alexander said. .
Police arrived on scene at 10:04, Alexander said. A K-9 tracking team was deployed, but their efforts were unsuccessful due to heavy rainfall.
The Yemassee Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
