Deck the halls, sing noel and savor some figgy pudding. The Sun City Chorus and Band is offering "A Holiday Spectacular" from Dec. 5-8 in Magnolia Hall. The concerts, which are open to the public, feature traditional holiday songs with a few favorites from family films.
Selecting the music has been fun for music director Art Hansen, who just marked 10 years working with the community's musicians. With all of the traditional songs still very popular, Hansen said there are some magical new arrangements that just seem to exemplify the spirit of the holidays.
"What is fun is coming to terms with an idea and then filling out that idea," Hansen said. "I look for music that's reasonably challenging and that brings satisfaction to every member of the chorus by performing it reasonably well. The culture of this chorus is in the fun of doing and doing it well."
Hansen said everybody should attend the concerts once and find out what the arts in this community is all about.
Never miss a local story.
"They would be greatly surprised," he said. "There's also the visual experience. It's not just a dry choral concert. The chorus communicates the music really well. They look past me to the audience and bring the audience into the musical experience."
The program will include instrumental performances by the band, a talented mix of volunteer community residents and paid performers. Hansen said the band has particularly enjoyed rehearsing music from "The Grinch."
Performances are 2 p.m. Dec. 5 and 7 p.m. Dec. 6-8. Tickets are $23 and available at the box office in Magnolia Hall from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tickets can be reserved by calling 843-368-3253 or purchased one hour before showtime.
