Seven gorgeous gardens were on display during the Sun City Avant -Gardeners 12th annual garden tour May 21.
Cal and Jodie Swan's garden amazes at every turn. An array of color fills the entire yard. A yellow Banks rose-covered arbor is surrounded by plants and pots set off by gorgeous swamp iris that stretch almost four feet tall. A blue podocarpus tree stands out among Cal's 300 varied plantings.
Helen Gilbert's romantic garden has a heart-shaped area with a fountain facing her lagoon. Her perennials attract butterflies. Some of these plants include canna lilies, Shasta daisies and salvia. The side garden has a variety of eye catching colors that pleased tour participants while they rested on Gilbert's bench.
Masses of blue plumbago vie for attention during the approach to Dan and Jo Kimberlin's garden, which features deer-resistant, colorful plants. The couple says they enjoy creating water features and functional yard decorations. Jo's artistic talent is obvious in curving pebbles, stones and edging.
Never miss a local story.
Aileen Jaczko's yard is a study in Japanese culture, reflecting the years she lived in Japan. Her pebble courtyard with an Asian-inspired fountain and bench beckons visitors to wander in and sit awhile. Boxwoods throughout the back outline the beautiful lagoon. Decorative bamboo and wood complete the Japanese look.
Mary Watson and Virginia Hernandez's courtyard is filled with colorful potted plants and lined with bright red Knockout roses. The back garden features a pond with a waterfall, complete with fish and multi-colored water lilies.
Ron and Toni LaRose-Gerken's Tuscan garden is a mixture of unique annuals, perennials and trees. The couple have hanging baskets, pots and plantings in most interesting places. This multi-level garden is on the marsh of the Okatie River. Plantings have come from many different places.
In Sun City's hummingbird and butterfly garden on Lake Somerset, the lower gardens offer nectar plants for hummingbirds. The upper garden contains nectar and host plants for butterflies. This unique garden is beautiful and educational.
