A Hilton Head Island woman was charged with driving under the influence Friday after she crashed her minivan into a cement street drain while navigating a traffic circle, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
The 49-year-old woman's van was found stopped in a traffic circle on Mathews Drive with two blown-out passenger's side tires. A deputy responding to the scene found where the woman collided with the cement drain at the circle's exit, the report said.
The woman told deputies she had no idea what happened, but that she might have hit something because the vehicle "wouldn't go anymore," the report said.
After smelling alcohol on her breath, deputies asked her if she had been drinking. At the scene, the woman said she had one vodka drink, but she later told them she had three, the report said. Deputies had to stop a sobriety test they administered at the scene because of the risk she might fall, the report said.
The woman was charged with driving under the influence and taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and released Saturday after posting $997 bond, according to the jail log.
