Retired banker Steve Fobes officially became a Beaufort County Council member Monday.
At a short ceremony in council chambers at the county administration in Beaufort, Judge Marvin Dukes administered the oath to the retired banker and former school board president in Fort Collins, Colo.
After the oath, Fobes, a Republican, posed with Dukes and his wife, Penny.
"He's very much a people person, and that's why he's doing this," she said. "That's really where he shines."
Fobes was the only candidate to run for the District 10 seat, which represents part of Hilton Head Island, after Republican Steve Baer resigned at the end of July.
"I look forward very much to working with you," Fobes said to the present council members. "I really, very much, want to represent the people of Beaufort County well."
Fobes lives in Palmetto Hall. He said his focus will be on county finances and improving economic development.
He will take over Baer's committee assignments, including the public facilities, finance and community service committees, council Chairman Paul Sommerville said.
SCHOOL BOARD RACE
Bill Payne has filed for the Beaufort County Board of Education's District 10 seat, which represents the same geographic area on Hilton Head. That position became vacant in August after the resignation of Mike Sanz.
Payne is a former principal at Whale Branch Middle School and is a member of the Hilton Head Island Volunteers in Medicine Clinic.
Write-in candidates can file for the seat until the end of the day Oct. 15.
