A St. Helena Island man charged with arson in a fire at his ex-girlfriend's home was reported to authorities for suspicious behavior Saturday by his ex-girlfriend, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Willie Aiken, 32, was charged Sept. 2 with arson in connection with a fire that burned the home of his ex-girlfriend on Legree Road. On Saturday, the woman reported to the Sheriff's Office that Aiken had continued to show up at a house she was staying in on St. Helena.
She told deputies she was concerned about his appearances and was worried he might do something crazy. Attempts by deputies to contact Aiken were unsuccessful.
Aiken was arrested Sept. 2 after a child living at the home told deputies she saw Aiken pouring a liquid onto the floor of the laundry room inside the house, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.
Aiken told the girl to leave, but she stayed until she saw Aiken strike matches and throw them into the liquid, the release said.
No one was inside the home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
Aiken set the fire a little over an hour after he reported that his 2013 Buick Century was stolen. The car was found about two hours later, on fire in a parking lot on Seaside Road. It was destroyed by the fire.
Sgt. Robin McIntosh said the investigations into both fires continue.
