The Mitchelville Project and Hilton Head Island Land trust will host a lecture at 5:15 p.m. Friday about the legacy of the U.S. Colored troops who served in the Civil War. Many of the soldiers served on Hilton Head and played a role in protecting Mitchelville.
Asa Gordon, Secretary General of the Sons and Daughters of the U.S. Colored Troops, will lead the talk, which will be held at the Cherry Hill School.
Following the program, a remembrance will be held at Fort Howell, located off Beach City Road, for the troops who built the fort.
The Hilton Head High School JROTC will participate in a flag-lowering ceremony at dusk.
Check back with The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette for a full story after the lecture, and follow reporter Brian Heffernan at twitter.com/IPBG_Brian.
