The state Supreme Court has refused a request by the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce to consider a lawsuit by critic Skip Hoagland.
Hoagland's suit, aimed at getting chamber records he believes should be accessible to the public, was originally filed in Beaufort County Circuit Court in November.
The chamber argued its records were not public. On Feb. 15, the chamber asked the Supreme Court to pull the case out of Circuit Court and rule on it, so the issue could be settled quickly. The chamber was concerned about the case being in lower courts for a prolonged period before it reached the Supreme Court.
"Public confidence in the chamber's honesty and integrity ... may be diminished so long as the issue remains unresolved," the chamber argued.

In a brief order issued Thursday, the high court refused to take the case, meaning it will be heard in Circuit Court.
