A drunk driver struck a parked Bluffton Police Department patrol car early today while the officer was responding to a single-car crash on Bluffton Parkway.
Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said officers were at the scene of a flipped vehicle at 2 a.m. with the driver trapped inside when Coty White of Bluffton struck the front of an empty patrol car parked on the side of the road.
The officer who drove the patrol car was outside of his vehicle directing traffic and was not injured, Babkiewicz said.
The single car crash that officers were responding to involved a car that had struck a tree and overturned, trapping the driver inside. Rescue crews with the Bluffton Township Fire District and Beaufort County EMS were able to get the driver out in about 15 minutes, who was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah by ambulance with minor injuries.
The crash closed Bluffton Parkway for about an hour while crews cleaned up the scene, according to a release from the fire district.
Babkiewicz said the completion of reports about the single car crash has been delayed, since police immediately had to address the crash into the patrol car.
S.C. Highway Patrol was called to arrest White. He is charged with driving under the influence in the second degree, failure to surrender driver's license, operating uninsured, hit and run with property damage, driving under suspension and open container, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log.
