A group of Beaufort High School singers took top honors this weekend at a national choral competition.
The Voices chorus won first place in its division and earned the Most Outstanding Choral Performance award Saturday at the WorldStrides Heritage Performance's 2013 Presidential Inauguration Festival in Washington, D.C.
Director Jordan Norris said the group beat out four others in its division and more than 11 choruses overall.
Norris said the win gives the chorus a boost as it prepares for a state competition in March.
"I'm proud of what we did," she said. "There's always room for improvement, and I know our choirs here in South Carolina can really give us a run for our money."
Norris said about 50 of the 75 students in Voices attended the national competition. Voices includes boys and girls in grades 10 through 12. Students must audition for a spot.
The students attended President Barack Obama's inauguration Monday.
Norris said she had participated in the same festival as a Beaufort High student at President George Bush's 2005 inauguration, and her students enjoyed their opportunity to attend Monday's ceremony.
"It didn't matter who they supported politically. Just seeing everyone up there and excited for the leader of our country. ... It's something they will remember for a long time," Norris said.
