The Heritage Library History & Genealogy Center is most appreciative of the generous gift from the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, an impact grant from the Graham Endowment Fund and the Caputo Endowment Fund.
This grant will enable the library to purchase a new microfilm reader-printer and to pay travel expenses for trips to the National Archives and other facilities for research for the Original Mitchelville Initiative.
The initiative is an effort to identify the original 1,500 Mitchelville residents -- one of the first freed slave self-governing communities established during the Civil War.
The support of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry is invaluable in helping us continue and expand our mission of preserving our past, collecting and presenting the history of Hilton Head Island through talks and classes, as well as offering assistance to members and guests in researching their family histories.
Never miss a local story.
Without this critical support, the Heritage Library would not be able to achieve its goals.
