A translator who says he was falsely accused by the Hardeeville Police Department of duping illegal immigrants out of their money filed a civil lawsuit for defamation against the department, with papers served Friday. Charges were dropped against 59-year-old Henry Roldan, who faced two misdemeanor charges of obtaining goods under false pretenses. Hardeeville police claimed Roldan posed as a bail bondsman and targeted Latinos, taking their money when relatives needed to be bailed out of jail. Police also told the media they believed Roldan conned hundreds of undocumented immigrants out of as much as $100,000 in the past five years. Roldan's lawyer, Hector Esquivel, said there's no evidence to support those claims and that they damaged Roldan's reputation.
