Twelve people were taken to area hospitals, one of whom was airlifted to Savannah, after a Jasper County HeadStart bus with no children aboard and a South Carolina Department of Corrections van with 10 passengers and a driver wrecked this morning on U.S. 17 in the Sheldon area, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The wreck occurred at about 6:30 a.m. near Bailey Road, and traffic was blocked for 2.5 hours. The HeadStart bus overturned.
The bus driver, Tina Hamilton, 33, of Pineland, will be cited for failure to yield right of way. The driver of the Corrections van is Jeremiah Doe, 26, of Ridgeland.
The Corrections van was carrying 10 former inmates who had just been released. One of them was flown to a Savannah for treatment and is in stable condition. All of the other people involved in the wreck were taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for observation.
