The family of Patsy Perry, a long-time Hilton Head Island resident, submitted the following obituary.
Patsy Lou Poplin Perry died Saturday, Nov. 24, with her husband and family at her side. Patsy was born February 17, 1934 in Winston-Salem, NC.
She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Ada Poplin and her sister Betty Poplin, sister-in-law Joan Perry Wyatt and brother-in-law John G.Perry.
Patsy graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem and attended Lenoir Rhyne College where she earned a degree in business. Charles and Patsy were married in 1954 and lived in Winston-Salem for two years before moving to Charlottesville, VA. While in Charlottesville, Patsy was an active member of the Monticello Garden Club and involved in the University Baptist Church.
After moving to Hilton Head Island, Patsy served as one of the first volunteers at the Hilton Head Hospital Auxiliary, was the Vice Chairman of the Sea Pines Academy Booster Club, and participated as an unofficial Heritage Golf Classic Tournament volunteer for 27 years, assisting her husband Charles. In addition, Patsy was a charter member of Providence Presbyterian Church where she served as Moderator of the Women of the Church and the Chairman of the Shepherding group among other church activities. She was a partner with her husband in Perry Printing for many years.
Expanding beyond her community activities, Patsy was known for befriending many people of all ages and even opened her home to a number of young people who quickly became extended members of the Perry family - She was known lovingly by all as “Ma P”. Patsy dedicated her life to her husband Charles and their four children. Never asking anything for herself, Patsy strongly believed in helping others, guiding each in her soft, elegant, and sophisticated way.
She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Charles R. Perry, III and her children, Kim (John) Bowen of Ridgeland, SC, Reid (Janet) Perry of Hilton Head Island, SC, Cheryl (Bill) Chandler of Columbia, SC, and Alan Perry of Hilton Head Island, SC, her grandchildren Angel, Steele, and MaKayla Chandler, Beckman and Chas Perry, Austin and Christian Perry, and Rushton and Eden Bowen, Sister-in-law Joan Perry, nephew Christopher and Jack Perry, Brother-in-law Calvin R. Wyatt, niece Ann Wyatt (Roger) Johnson, and Calvin (Jan) Wyatt Jr.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 1 o’clock in the afternoon at Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cordilla Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC.
