Overwhelmed by grief after his wife died, James continued to work, but then suffered a heart attack.
Soon after recovering, his company laid him off, which meant he also lost medical coverage. Within the next several months, he had two more heart attacks. He walked with a severe limp, experienced continual numbness and fell asleep spontaneously throughout the day.
He applied for disability. While waiting on a response, he received an eviction notice.
Bluffton Self Help, along with other human services organizations, paid the rent to stop the eviction. James has since been approved for disability and moved into a smaller, more affordable apartment.
Bluffton Self Help provides a broad range of human services for poor working families, the disabled, sick and elderly.
