The office manager for Heritage Medical Center on Hilton Head Island has been accused of embezzling more than $63,000 from the practice over three years by giving herself an unauthorized pay raise.
Jeanie Lynn Moore, 42, of Bluffton faces a felony charge of breach of trust with fraudulent intent, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. She turned herself in at about 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center.
Moore had access to the office's payroll and bank account and sent herself paychecks for more than her salary, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.
Moore also was responsible for cleaning the medical office and was supposed to receive a monthly check for that work, McIntosh said. Instead, Moore billed the medical office for her cleaning services several times a month, resulting in a "much larger amount than what had been agreed upon," McIntosh said.
In sum, investigators believe Moore stole more than $63,000 during her three years at Heritage Medical Center. None of that money has been recovered, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The investigation began this month when partners at Heritage Medical uncovered discrepancies in payroll accounts during a routine audit. Dr. William Petty and other partners reported the embezzlement to the Sheriff's Office on March 5. Moore was named as a suspect in the incident report.
Investigators are still poring over financial records to determine how much money is missing, McIntosh said.
Moore was released on her own recognizance Thursday morning, according to the jail log.
