Executive chef Keith Josefiak of The Old Fort Pub proved he can keep cool in the kitchen at the sixth annual Cooks & Books event to benefit Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry on Sunday.
He took home the 2012 Best Under Fire trophy in "The Heat is On!" chef's competition, held at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa.
Out of eight local chefs, Josefiak was declared the winner for his recipe created in 30 minutes from a basket of mystery ingredients -- chilean sea bass, fingerling potatoes, brussel sprouts and lemon plums.
The runner-up was Yuri Gow of Antonio's.
The chef's competition took place as 12 Lowcountry authors were signing their books and meeting fans at Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry's signature fundraiser.
Thirteen local restaurants served up samples of their dishes, with attendees declaring CQ's Restaurant the winner of the People's Choice award.
More than 800 people attended the event Sunday, enabling the organization to continue its mission of providing literacy programs for adults at three learning centers in Bluffton, Beaufort and Hilton Head Island, said assistant director of development Dodi Eschenbach.
