A Beaufort Marine was killed Sunday night in a single-car crash on Interstate 95 in Clarendon County.
Lance Cpl. Floyd Gregg Cartrette, 21, was traveling south on I-95 near Summerton at about 6 p.m. when he lost control of his 2002 Ford Ranger and veered off the left side of the interstate, said Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson, spokesman for the S.C. Highway Patrol. The pickup ran down an embankment and struck several trees before coming to a stop, trapping Cartrette inside.
Cartrette, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene, Robinson said.
The highway patrol is investigating what caused Cartrette to lose control of his vehicle.
Never miss a local story.
Gunnery Sgt. Chad McMeen, spokesman for Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, said Tuesday that Cartrette was assigned to Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 224.
Cartrette, a native of Whiteville, N.C., worked as one of the squadron's jet engine mechanics, McMeen said.
