RIDGELAND -- A former South Carolina Highway patrolman will be laid to rest today in Ridgeland after a fatal motorcycle crash Sunday night.
Kenneth Marion Woods Jr., 61, of Point South died Sunday about 6 miles north of Ridgeland on Frontage Road, said Lance Cpl. Robert Beres, spokesman for the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Woods was traveling north at about 8 p.m. when his 2006 Yamaha motorcycle ran off the left side of the road, crossed the median and struck a cement drain, throwing Woods and his passenger, 24-year-old Kerri Smith of Ridgeland, from the bike, Beres said. Neither Woods nor Smith was wearing a helmet, Beres said.
Woods was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah where she is listed in good condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Memorial services for Woods will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Gillisonville Baptist Church.
