It was a beautiful day to be on the water Wednesday as Larry Toomer, of the Bluffton Oyster Co., checked his crab traps on the May River. Toomer says that though the weather has been nice, the crabbing has been poor this winter and he theorizes the dry weather is the cause. The drought is making the seawater saltier and driving the crabs too far up freshwater creeks to catch, he says. The South Carolina Drought Response Committee raised the drought threat for Beaufort County to "moderate" last week. About half of the state 46 counties are experiencing similar rainfall shortages. Only a half-inch of rain fell last month at the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport - more than three inches below the normal level. This has been the driest winter in the area since 2008, according to National Weather Service data. Jay Karr, Staff photo

Workers from Mallard Marine rebuild the bulkhead on the bluff over the May River at the Church of the Cross on Tuesday. While they are replacing the 100-foot section of wall that failed, the area will be closed to visitors. Construction and landscaping should be finished in about a month, said the church's Bob Millikan. "We're trying to protect the bluff and protect the river," he said. -Staff photo
