A dog with Beaufort County connections advanced in competition at the prestigious Westminster Dog Show and will be featured in Tuesday night’s television broadcast of the final rounds at Madison Square Garden in New York.
“Mack” — known formally as GCHS CH Rozebottel’s Big Mack At GrandCru — won Best of Breed in competition earlier in the day.
The Lagotto Romagnolo is owned by Melanie Steele of Bluffton and Mary Wood of Hilton Head Island. His handler is Rindi Gaudet of Summerville.
Mack will next compete in the Sporting Group against dogs of other breeds, including spaniels and retrievers.
The winner of the Sporting Group will advance to the final Best in Show round against the winners of six other groups — Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding.
The dog show will be broadcast starting at 8 p.m. on FS1.
This is Mack’s third year in a row to win Best of Breed at Westminster, and he was the first Lagotto to win the Sporting Group, said Steele.
Mack was born in the Netherlands. Lagotto Romagnolo dogs have a long history in Europe, where they are known as Italian truffle dogs, using their powerful noses to search out truffles.
After this competition, Mack will retire from dog shows and will live with Wood on Hilton Head, Steele said.
