Shaved ice for a good cause has rolled into the Lowcountry -- in a tiki-hut themed truck, no less.
Kona Ice, a mobile franchise with locations in more than 44 states, now has a local presence, according to a news release. Co-owners Erich Lindemann and Haley Gilmore, a husband-and-wife team, are basing their unit out of Bluffton, but will make stops throughout Beaufort County at festivals and neighborhood events in addition to the truck's regular weekday and weekend routes.
The concept behind Kona Ice is philanthropic: Purchase a cup of shaved ice and part of the proceeds go to community-based organizations, such as school groups and teams. The unit can be booked for fundraisers, parties or other events.
"It's an opportunity to enjoy a unique, tropical treat," Gilmore said. "For a couple of dollars, you can experience the excitement of the truck, flavor your own Kona Ice, donate to an organization you care about and kick back for a few minutes."
