Construction has begun on a new access road from Beaufort Town Center and Marsh Road to Sycamore Street by City Hall.
The road, which is about a block long, is being built by developer 303 Associates as part of a deal struck with city officials in November 2012.
A small triangular plot in front of Burlap Cafe, Bakery and Gifts and Quality Inn at Town Center contains a right of way for Lovejoy Street, which goes behind City Hall. It was given to 303 Associates in exchange for building a road that would be turned over to the city. The developer retained on-street parking rights.
In exchange, 303 Associates received a small parcel of land, which has been combined with property it already owned. That spot has been much discussed as the potential home of a Starbucks and another restaurant, but plans are still being discussed.
Never miss a local story.
Courtney Worrell of 303 Associates said crews will try to minimize traffic interruption during the construction.
