Chipotle Mexican Grill, a fast-casual food chain that serves burritos and tacos, is likely coming to Tanger Outlet Center 1.
Beaufort County's Development Review Team tentatively approved a permit Wednesday to build the restaurant off U.S. 278 in greater Bluffton, according to zoning and development administrator Hillary Austin.
Construction will begin soon after the permit is finalized, Tanger spokeswoman LaDonna Shamlou said.
"Both parties are very interested in getting things moving quickly," she said Thursday.
The restaurant will sit next to the Polo Ralph Lauren factory store at the outlets. It will share its 4,900-square-foot building with another tenant. Shamlou said the center is still in negotiations to fill the space and declined to name potential occupants.
The location will be Beaufort County's first Chipotle, which has nearly 1,600 restaurants worldwide, including sites in Charleston and Savannah.
The Denver-based chain has exploded in recent years, building 56 restaurants in the fourth quarter of last year, according to its most recent corporate filing.
Restaurant industry analysts say diners see the company as a step up from traditional fast-food chains such as Burger King and Wendy's.
"It will be a great addition," Shamlou said.
