Beaufort County's 11-month search for a new airports director ended with the hiring of Jon Rembold, who began his new duties Monday.
The former U.S. Marine Corps ground officer and Ward Edwards Engineering project manager spent the day in an orientation at the Lady's Island airport, County Administrator Gary Kubic said.
"I'm really excited about it," Kubic said. "I think Jon's a good fit for us."
Rembold brings leadership and managerial skills to the position, Kubic said. At Ward Edwards, a Bluffton-based engineering company that has been involved in many Lowcountry building ventures, Rembold managed more than 200 residential and commercial development projects.
Managing those projects fostered a keen understanding of budgeting, scheduling and customer service, Rembold said.
"I'll be able to speak the same language," he said.
The skills that applied as a manager for Ward Edwards will serve Rembold well as he juggles runway extensions, tree-cutting programs and terminal renovation projects as airports director, Kubic said.
About six people applied for the position, Kubic said. Kubic and deputy county administrator Bryan Hill interviewed three candidates by phone earlier this year but opened the search again because Kubic wasn't comfortable with the results, he said.
Rembold emerged as the best fit for the job, both because of his managerial experience and because he's already involved with communities in Beaufort County, Kubic said.
Rembold's salary is $85,000, Kubic said.
For now, Rembold is focused on learning the job, which is like "sipping from a fire hose," he said.
"I'm going in with eyes wide open," he said. "I really do want to help the county grow economically, and I think the airports are a part of that."
Rembold served as chairman of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce board of directors for 2011-12 and is a former president of the Lady's Island Business and Professional Association.
